[I’ll Give You a Break is a sporadic series of posts highlighting obscure (and not so obscure) breakbeats in unlikely places, so that they may be sampled by producers or just enjoyed for their own geeky purposes. NB: Don’t forget to clear all samples through the proper channels (cough).]
The recently issued compilation Psych Funk Sa-Re-Ga! Psychedelic Funk Music in India 1970-1983 (on World Psychedelic Funk Classics; is anyone still unclear on what sort of music this is?) is bursting with flavorful cuts in the style reiterated at length in the title and in the label's name. Probably my favorite from it is Hemant and Asha Bhosle’s “Phir Teri Yaad.”
For our purposes, the first 65 seconds offer so many outstanding sounds for your next instant-classic production. Really, just dip into anything in that timespan and you’re halfway to funkadelic Nirvana. So many drum timbres; so many different-tempo’d beats; so much cool FX’d airplane engine whoosh. You almost have to go out of your way with this track to fuck it up. And I know you have too much skill to let that happen.
